Please excuse the steam*.
It is currently, according to weather.com, 92 degrees Fahrenheit, but it “feels like” 105 due to the humidity. To say it’s a bit steamy is an understatement.
We picked a bumper crop of cucumbers this morning!
Too hot to garden, we’re getting some pickling done this afternoon . . . I’m trying several recipes including a few from my favorite pickling cookbook, The Joy of Pickling, as well as a variation of this one for a light-vinegar refrigerator pickle, and some lacto-fermented full-sours and Bubbie’s knock-offs. Wish me luck!
Oh, and by the way, those cucumbers are meant to be yellow . . . and round.
Still waiting patiently for these ones to ripen . . .
*I cleaned off the lens three times to take four pictures and I still got steam on each and every one!

I’ve actually had one of those gherkins! Fresh off the vine, even. I meant to keep one to save the seeds, but I lost it on the way home.
So, what do the lemon cucumbers taste like? Or is the name more about the appearance?
Hi Leanne!
Yes, the name is based more upon the color and size than the flavor, though they do look lovely in a pickling jar! They taste great, with a nice sweetness, but lots of seeds for their size. I popped a few of the ripening Mexican sour gherkins when I was out in the garden this afternoon and they were lovely! May have to see if I can pick enough to make a quart . . . though (like cherry tomatoes) I might have a hard time getting them into the house if my little ones are helping! It’s one of those “one for me, one for the bucket” kind of situations!
Best,
Sarah
